Ami Vitale. Kamara and Kilifi. Permanent Collection.
Vital Impacts is honored to have this photograph as part of our permanent, year-round collection.
Kilifi was an 18-month-old rhino and his keeper, Kamara was hand-raising along with two other baby rhinos at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya. Kamara would spend 12 hours every day watching over the vulnerable baby rhinos. Kenya’s black rhinos population had plummeted to near extinction but their numbers are again rising in Kenya due to the efforts by the people and government to protect them.
National Geographic Magazine photographer and filmmaker Ami Vitale has traveled to more than 100 countries, bearing witness not only to violence and conflict, but also to surreal beauty and the enduring power of the human spirit. Learn more about Ami Vitale.
