Yak (Bos grunniens) are native of the tibetan plateau. Covered in a multilayered fine and dense coat, they can tolerate temperatures well below -40F. Males can weigh 2000 pounds and reach six feet in height, while females called Nak, are often much smaller. Domesticated in the first millenia before Christ, they have lived in intimate harmony with people ever since, used to carry loads, for their hair and milk. Naturally “Naks” are milked, and its by-products most often wrongly called “Yak Cheese” by foreigners.

Born in Argentina, Tommy Heinrich began photographing and climbing at an early age. After graduating in Animal Sciences, he departed for the USA from where he commenced a life of traveling the world, combining his passions for photography, climbing and nature.
