Pie Aerts. Before the River Knows Its Name.
As soon as the helicopter lifted off along Iceland’s South Coast, I felt the thrill of approaching something truly remarkable. Viewed from the sky, the glacial rivers below shed their familiar shapes, becoming intricate, almost painterly patterns. Their twisting currents and shifting hues of blue capture the restless energy of flowing water, yet carry a singular essence found only in these icy, glacial streams.
Pie Aerts (b. 1985) is a Dutch photographer based in Haarlem. His work examines and questions the intricate and often melancholic relationship between people and place, in an attempt to explain why we seem increasingly disconnected from each other, ourselves, and the environment that sustains us. In doing so, he consistently chooses to prioritize hope over despair.
