Bob is a Caribbean flamingo from the island of Curaçao. His life changed when he flew into a hotel window, leaving him severely concussed. He was taken in by veterinarian Odette Doest, who runs the wildlife rehabilitation center and conservation organization Fundashon Dier en Onderwijs Cariben (FDOC). Due to lasting injuries, Bob could not be released. Instead, he became a spokes bird for environmental awareness — helping to educate local communities on the importance of protecting the island’s wildlife.
At Landhuis Jan Thiel, a former plantation house that reflects Curaçao’s colonial past, Bob preens quietly. On the tiled floor where control once shaped the lives of my ancestors, I now witness care and hope instead.
