The Last Rhinos: A New Hope on National Geographic, Disney+, and Hulu

We're honored to share that The Last Rhinos: A New Hope, a film about Vital Impacts’ founder Ami Vitale’s ongoing work with the northern white rhinos and the extraordinary people fighting to save them, premieres August 24 on National Geographic Channel and streams on Disney+ and Hulu.

With only two surviving females left, a dedicated team from the Biorescue project and caretakers at Ol Pejeta Conservancy are racing against time to create the world’s first surrogate rhino pregnancy, a groundbreaking step that could bring these magnificent animals back from the edge of extinction.

This isn’t just science in action. It’s a profoundly human story—wildlife experts, conservationists, and scientists driven by love, hope, and an unshakable determination to repair what’s been broken. Since the death of Sudan, the last male northern white rhino, every egg collected, every embryo created, and every attempt made has brought us closer to understanding what’s possible in saving endangered species.

While the first surrogate pregnancy attempt was unsuccessful, the team’s resolve has only grown—learning, adapting, and pressing forward. You’ll witness the intimate bonds between rhinos and their caretakers and the relentless passion of those fighting for their future.

The Last Rhinos: A New Hope is a story of courage and of how far we are willing to go to make things right before it’s too late. We hope you’ll watch and be inspired by this urgent, hopeful mission because saving these rhinos is, ultimately, about saving ourselves.
