About the Work
Dandenong Creek, 2023
The name Dandenong is thought to come from the Aboriginal word Tanjenong, meaning ‘high mountain’ – a possible reference to Mount Dandenong where the creek originates. The creek provided water and food for the Boon Wurrung people. Before the arrival of Europeans, Dandenong Creek and its extensive wetlands provided habitat for a great variety of wildlife including kangaroos, wallabies, emus, possums and other small marsupials and waterfowl.
Now, the creek is polluted by still sustains some wildlife while some state efforts are being made to conserve this ancient creek. This image was made a few days after catastrophic flooding miles away closed this area. Part of an ongoing body of work in which I use traditional photographic techniques in non-traditional ways to highlight the sacred importance of the bushland I am privileged to call home.
Morganna Magee is based in Melbourne, Australia, living and working on the unceded land of the Bunurong people of the Kulin Nations, the foothills of the Dandenong ranges. Her practice explores human relations to the more-than-human world using traditional photographic practices in non-traditional ways.
