Rachael Talibart. ‘Twins’, Storm Eunice, February 2022. Limited Edition.
Storm Eunice was one of the biggest storms to hit UK in recent years and prompted a rare red weather warning. When it hit, I was travelling away from my usual storm beach, but I found a cove where I could watch the waves from a safe position. I am interested in the tradition of the ‘Sublime’ in art, the idea of terrifying beauty. Waves are a wonderful subject for the Sublime. They express the ocean at its most powerful, an implacable, relentless force of beauty and power. This was my favourite photograph from that day, captured as a beam of light broke through the clouds to illuminate a mighty breaking wave. I love the ocean because it takes us away from our self-importance. It makes small, insignificant things of us all yet, at the same time, it is exhilarating and profoundly life affirming.
