A guerrilla commander on the way to demobilizing crosses the Western Cordillera mountains in southwestern Colombia on June 11, 2016. With the rest of the troops of the 30th Front of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrilla army she marched through a landscape of coca fields and small peasant holdings along the old Camino Real (royal road) which the Spanish used during colonial times.

The 30th Front of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrilla army marched from a jungle camp in the Naya River basin, one of the guerrilla army’s historical bastions, to more centrally located camps as a first step towards demobilizing. The FARC planned this movement of troops to signal their compliance with the peace accord. By concentrating their forces, they enabled UN monitors to observe the process and to ensure their troops would not disperse before demobilizing.

Since the late 1980s, Stephen Ferry has traveled to dozens of countries, covering social and political change, human rights, and the environment, on assignment for publications such as National Geographic, GEO, TIME and the New York Times. In 2016, along with a group of Colombian and international colleagues he founded OjoRojo Fábrica Visual, a non-profit foundation in Bogotá dedicated to promoting best practices in documentary photography.
