Monarch butterflies at the Rosario Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Michoacan, Mexico.

Every fall-winter, the reserve is home to millions of monarch butterflies that migrate from as far away as Canada to over-winter in the oyamel fir tree forests of Michoacan. According to UNESCO, which declared the reserve a World Heritage Site in 2008, the total biosphere reserve area of over 216 square miles protects an estimated 70% of the total overwintering population of the monarch butterfly’s eastern population.

However the monarch butterfly is an at-risk species, threatened by pesticides, pollution, climate change and a complicated array of local social and economic dynamics, such as illegal logging, in their migratory habitat located near one of Mexico's most dangerous regions.

Katie Orlinsky’s photography tells stories about the everyday lives of people in extreme situations, capturing the intimate moments of daily life behind larger global issues. She has photographed all over the world documenting everything from conflict and social issues to wildlife and sports.
