Alys Tomlinson. The Islanders.

Over two years, Alys explored ritual, tradition and identity on islands of the Venetian lagoon, Sicily and Sardinia. Photographed amongst crumbling stone, dramatic rocks and rural fields, the portraits capture traditional costumes and masks worn during festivities and celebrations on these Italian islands.

Alys Tomlinson was born in Brighton, UK and studied photography at Central Saint Martins. Her recent projects Ex-Voto, Lost Summer and Gli Isolani (The Islanders) have been exhibited internationally and published as books. She is the recipient of numerous awards including the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize and Sony World Photographer of the Year.

Alys Tomlinson is an editorial and fine art documentary photographer based in London. Alys’s work is collected privately and is in the following collections: National Portrait Gallery (London), The Rencontres d’Arles Collection, The Bodleian Library. Since 2022 Alys has been an ambassador for Wex Photo Video working closely with them on their #ChangeTheImage campaign.
